Why Mashobra Is the Perfect Weekend Getaway from Delhi

Oct 21, 2026

Every household in Delhi can relate to the Friday evening when almost every corporate majdoor closes their laptop for the next 3 days; cousins and friends tend to forward reels of pine forests, and the moment you reach home, your mummy asks, “Shall we go somewhere for the weekend?” All of a sudden, your group chat buzzes with plans, hotel links, and opinions of Uncles who visited Shimla in 1994.

Then comes the memory of Mall Road packed tight, honking cars, and a ridge crowded with selfie sticks. A quiet sigh follows, and the tired traveller scrolls again, hoping for a place that offers silence, deodar air, and a steaming cup of chai on a wooden balcony.

That hope has an address about twelve kilometres beyond Shimla. Mashobra waits there, and this blog explores why it suits a busy Delhi weekend so beautifully.

Why It Is Called “Quiet Shimla”

Mashobra sits at an altitude of 2,146 meters, where the streets are comparatively very quiet compared to Shimla’s overly commercialized ones. Days here usually revolve around walking on the forested trails, chai with a view of the valley, pahadon wali maggie, and a book on the balcony.

Mashobra is home to the Shimla Water Catchment and Wildlife Sanctuary, and due to strict regulations, the buildings are very limited here. It rarely appears on travel posts and trending reels, which results in fewer people visiting it, and those who do are also looking forward to appreciating the solitude.

The British Raj favoured Mashobra as a retreat, and today the President of India spends time at Chharabra nearby. That heritage helped keep the area green and unhurried.

How to Reach Mashobra from Delhi

Here’s how you can reach Mashobra from Delhi:

The Friday-Night Drive

An overnight drive from Delhi: you will need to cover about 340 km, which will take you 7-9 hours to reach Shimla. If you are opting for such a long drive, we suggest you start your journey before 7 pm and take turns while driving. That way, you will reach Mashobra by 2 am. Get a late check-in and rest for a while before you go to Mashobra.

Shatabdi or Himalayan Queen to Kalka, Then the Toy Train

You can easily get Shatabdi or Himalayan Queen to reach Kalka and enjoy a scenic narrow-gauge toy train ride.

ISBT Delhi to Shimla

This is the one that is preferred by most people. There are numerous overnight buses from ISBT Kashmiri Gate that will take you to Shimla. You even get options like luxury sleeper buses, so you can sleep and wake up to the views of the mountains all around you as you reach Shimla. From there, you can rent a bike, take a local bus, or take a taxi to reach Mashobra.

Why Mashobra Works So Well for a Weekend

  • Less crowd, cleaner air
  • A forest that is still protected
  • A base for Shimla and Kufri day trips
  • A place for couples, families, and solo travellers

Best Places to Visit in Mashobra

Here are some of the places that you must visit while you are in Mashobra:

Craignano Nature Park

This Italian-inspired estate sits on the Shimla–Naldehra road at about 7,700 feet. Chevalier Frederico Peliti, an Italian confectioner and photographer, established it and named it after his native village.

  • What to see: A small lake, picnic lawns, flower beds, forest paths, a treehouse and the historic uphill water-lift mechanism.
  • Best for: Families, couples, photographers and travellers wanting a gentle outdoor stop rather than a demanding trek.
  • Time to keep: Allow roughly 1–2 hours for an unhurried walk or Picnic.
  • Plan smart: Wear shoes with grip because wooded paths can become slippery after rain or snow.

Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary

This government-managed protected forest near Dhalli serves two purposes: it conserves Himalayan habitat and protects an important water catchment for Shimla.

  • Landscape: Expect a temperate forest dominated by deodar, fir, spruce, kail, chir pine, and broad-leaved species, with streams and quiet wooded tracks.
  • What to do: Take a nature walk, join a guided visit, watch birds or photograph the forest. Treat wildlife sightings as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
  • Time to keep: Reserve half a day.

Shali Tibba Trek

Rising behind the Mashobra ridge, Shali Tibba reaches about 9,423 feet and offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Shimla region. A Bhima Kali temple built in traditional wood-and-stone style crowns the summit.

  • Starting point: The usual approach begins at Khatnol village, reached by a winding drive through blue-pine and cedar country.
  • Trail character: It is a short mountain trek by Himalayan standards but includes sustained uphill walking and steeper sections near the top.
  • Time to keep: Give it a full day, including the drive, ascent, summit break and descent. Start early enough to return before dusk.
  • Carry: Water, food, sun protection, a warm or rain layer, basic first aid and sturdy walking shoes. Do not depend on finding supplies higher on the trail.

Chharabra and the Presidential Retreat

Chharabra is home to Rashtrapati Niwas, formerly The Retreat and now the official summer residence of the President of India. The estate developed from a nineteenth-century viceregal refuge and became the presidential summer retreat in 1965.

Mahasu Devta Temple

The Mahasu Devta Temple is a local religious site associated with Lord Shiva in the regional tradition. It offers a quieter, culture-led experience beyond viewpoints and forest walks.

  • Cultural highlight: The annual Mahasu Jatara or Mahasu Fair is celebrated in May and draws devotees to the area.
  • Time to keep: Plan 45–60 minutes for the temple itself.
  • Etiquette: Dress modestly, remove footwear where required, ask before photographing worshippers or rituals, and keep voices low.
