Giu Village in Spiti Valley: Explore the Mysterious 500-Year-Old Mummy

Where Is Giu Village in Spiti Valley? 

Giu Village is in the district of Lahaul and Spiti near the Indo-China Border. This village is situated at an altitude of 3,048 m above sea level. This is a very remote village, falling between the town of Tabo and Sumdo (40 km from Tabo), with a steep uphill drive of 8 km from Sumdo. 

The Story of Sangha Tenzin 

Sangha Tenzin is said to be the name of the monk who was meditating in the remote area near the Indo-Tibetan border at an elevation of roughly 3,200 to 3,657 meters. According to his body, he died in the 1500s and wasn’t discovered until 1975, but his tomb collapsed during an earthquake. In the year 2004, when roads were being constructed in the region, ITBP personnel discovered it again, and ever since, it has been in the Giu village in a glass chamber for everybody to see. It is the only Buddhist Monk mummy (discovered) in India that underwent natural mummification.  

The Legend of the Monk Who Protected Giu 

The villagers of Giu were suffering from the torment of scorpions to the extent that something had to be done about it. This is when Monk Sangha Tenzin asked the villagers to put him in a tomb in a seated position to mummify him and predicted that the day he died, a rainbow would shine brightly upon the town. This practice is part of Dzogchen tradition in the Nyingma sect of Buddhism. His prophecy actually came true, and from that moment, Giu Village was free from scorpions. 

The Science Behind Giu’s Preserved Mummy 

Victor H Mair’s team conducted research in which they found residual nitrogen levels, which are evidence of prolonged fasting, and noted the visible Gomtang that helped his body to stay seated until death. When tested by sampling Protocol, measurements, radiocarbon dating, CT results, and dental analysis, they came to the assumption that the monk followed the Japanese sokushinbutsu. 

The idea that his hair, teeth, and fingernails grow is not true because there is no scientific proof of it.
